Diamonds Might Be Forever, But Bon Bons are Better!

Since the holiday season is in full swing, I have been sending and receiving lots of catalogs and Christmas mailers. Some of these holiday catalogs even garner news coverage. Take, for example, the lavish “Fantasy” catalog from Neiman Marcus, which is full of high-end presents. One of the gifts in the Neiman Marcus catalog stood out: the “Poetic Wish” set, a million dollar his & hers watch set from French jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels, which features moving images of a couple on the diamond-encircled faces of each watch.

I’m not really into diamonds—one of my favorite sayings is the Emma Goldman quote:"I’d rather have roses on my table than diamonds around my neck"—but I love the backstory and visuals of these watches and the romantic vacation package that comes with them.

According to the Neiman Marcus website"It all begins with a classic story: Boy meets girl. A romance is sparked. They share a kiss at midnight on Paris's Pont des Arts. But fate intervenes, and they are separated. Each night, they send wishes—he upon a star, she upon a kite—that, one day, they will reunite."

Each watch face has colorful figures of a man and a woman surrounded by Parisian landmarks like Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower and the “scene” moves with the time. You can watch a video of the watches in motion here. Doesn’t that whimsical imagery remind you of romantic French films like Amelie and French Kiss, too? The watch set is part of a $1,090,000.00 package that would allow you to visit the Van Cleef & Arpels atelier in Paris and the workshop in Geneva where the watches are crafted according to centuries of Swiss tradition.

While I’m not a diamond girl, I would love to be able to take the Van Cleef & Arpels trip with Pascal to Paris, where we met, and visit Geneva together. Think of all the chocolate inspiration in the Swiss capital! Can you imagine what a romantic trip that would be? But this time of year, we are far too busy making bon bons to take a lavish vacation (money being no object, of course…wink, wink). If, like most of us, you don’t have a million dollars to spend on your sweetheart this year, give the romantic gift of our chocolate bon bons. They’re a little taste of French magic from right here in Wilmington!
