Developing our flavors has been an adventure! Peanut Buttah, which was the inspiration to start South 'n France, is our "original recipe" and is actually an old family recipe. Fudge Brownie and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough were created for the launch of the company at the Carolina Chocolate Festival.Coconut was the next one to be added.During our second year in business, we started our New Year, New Flavor parties where we invite our customers to try about half-a-dozen contending flavors. It was a tie between Pistachio and Cookies ‘n Crème so we decided to add them both!In 2008, to celebrate our third year in business, we held our second annual New Year, New Flavor party with five contending flavors. Café au Lait was the run-away favorite. This flavor was inspired by our discovery or a pure coffee extract made by a micro processor here in North Carolina that was so aromatic and savory we knew we just had to use it in a bon bon!
Yes, all of our bon bon products are shipped with a flavor legend. Match the color on the legend to the color of the foil so you’ll know which bon bon you are eating.
We’ve yet to determine how long it takes to make a single bon bon, but we know that it is a long time. For example, take our fudge brownie bon bon: First, we bake individual batches of dark chocolate fudge brownies and then crumble them into fine pieces; we then make individual batches of chocolate fudge and fold them into the brownies. We mix this into a dough, roll the dough into individual bon bons, chill the dough, dip the dough into melted chocolate and then chill the bon bons again. You can try this at home, but be prepared to take the day off! It will take you approximately six hours to make your first batch of bon bons.
We make our bon bons in small batches and dip each one individually, by hand, because we think that’s what makes them taste so good. No two bon bons are exactly alike; the slight variations in size and shape are another indicator that our bon bons are the real thing—made entirely by hand!
Hand-dipped chocolates are a rarity these days because they are so labor-intensive. Most truffles and chocolates are coated by machine on a conveyor belt. That little hole in the bon bon is actually a status symbol. It’s your proof that the bon bon was indeed made and dipped by hand. The hole shows where the dipping needle was inserted into the bon bon.
No. There are no raw eggs in any of our products.
It depends on what kind of a vegetarian you are. South 'n France does not use any gelatin in our products. All of our bon bons are ovo-lacto-vegetarian friendly (for vegetarians who eat dairy products and eggs). Six of our bon bon flavors are lacto-vegetarian friendly (they do not contain eggs). The exception is our Fudge Brownie Bon Bon; eggs were baked into the brownies used to make our Fudge Brownie filling. We are unable to accommodate strict vegans as our products do contain refined sugars.
We make every effort to ensure that our bon bon flavors do not come into contact with our nut-flavored bon bons (Peanut Buttah, Pistachio) or the chocolate used to dip them. However, because all of our bon bons are made in the same facility, there is a slight possibility that any flavor could contain trace elements of nuts. If you are allergic to nuts or nut products, we recommend that you resist the temptation to try our delicious bon bons, and that you instead indulge in sweets from a company that can guarantee no adverse effects for nut allergy sufferers.
